The Day Before Your Surgery with Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation
Patient Preparation
- As of midnight, the night before your surgery, please discontinue eating all foods (this includes consumption of anything including MJ edibles). However, please plan to eat normally DURING THE DAY BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT; drink eight (8) glasses of water or juice throughout the day prior to your surgery.
- DO NOT EAT AFTER MIDNIGHT. You may drink clear liquids such as water, apple juice, or black coffee for up to 3 hours before your scheduled surgery start time.
- Consume NO alcoholic beverages in the evening before your surgery.
- No smoking- Nicotine is a vaso-constrictor that delays healing and impairs lung function. Refrain from smoking for one week prior to surgery and for two weeks after.
- Refrain from marijuana use 24 hours prior to your surgery and an additional 24 hours after surgery.
- Plan who will accompany you to your surgery. Your driver must remain in the office, or on the property, during your procedure. They must also be able to stay with you after surgery.
- Plan your menu after your surgery and have the recommended “post oral surgery” foods on hand before your surgery. You will be instructed to eat soft and cool foods, immediately following the surgery such as Jell-O, applesauce, pudding, milkshakes, etc. until the numbness from your procedure wears off. Then, remain on soft foods for about one week after your procedure.
- If you have been given (or prescribed) Peridex (mouth rinse), start rinsing two days before surgery, two times per day. Please plan to fill all other prescriptions prior to your surgery day.
